Why PIM?

Why is it an advantage to use a PIM system in an e-commerce solution?

Why use a PIM system?

Virtually every company use an ERP system for the handling of data and processes that relate to the company's financial transactions.

It could be systems like Axapta, Navision, Dynamics, SAP, etc. A traditional ERP system is suitable for handling data such as item numbers, prices, discounts and stock levels.

However, the ERP system is less useful in the process of storing, structuring, maintaining and distributing the data describing the company's products. This is where a PIM system has its relevance.

What is PIM?

A genuine PIM solution is not just a system that offers the user the ability to create unlimited data fields in a product database or in a CMS system.

In a true PIM system, the entire data structure is designed to support the creation of complex and multi dimensional data. It should clearly be able to distinguish between products and variants and feature a logic in how attributes are linked to specific business areas. It should offer a possibility of a logical control of "inheritance" so that the PIM system itself inherits relevant information down the product structure. A wide range of tools and features such as bulk update tools, multiple market and language versions are available through the PIM system's interface.
